CO2 emissions from passenger cars and commercial vehicles in Europe in 2024

For the first time, ITM (by IDDRI) has joined forces with ICCT and ECCO to consolidate emissions data for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles registered in the European Union. This report presents data for the year 2024, and will be followed by monthly publications in 2025. Registrations are broken down by engine for each of the pools. Average CO2 emissions are also presented by brand or group. For passenger cars, highlights for 2024 include  :

  • market shares of : 14% for electric powertrains, 7% for plug-in hybrids, 32% for non-plug-in hybrids (including mild hybrids; PHEV)
  • average CO2 emissions of 107g/km in 2024, including eco-innovations

It should also be noted that the market share of electric vehicles will reach 17% in December 2024, with average emissions of 103gCO2/km.

The publication also presents an overview of the deployment of recharging infrastructures in Europe.

In 2025, ICCT and ITM (by IDDRI) will carry out these analyses on a monthly basis, using an equivalent format. This choice is justified by the desire for regular monitoring of vehicle registrations, in line with the regulatory timetable for CO2 standards, which requires a 15% reduction in emissions by 2025 compared with the previous threshold applicable to the period 2021 to 2024.
